How To Apply Your Nighttime Skincare Routine In 2021

After being out and about all day, your skin might need a little help to repair itself. Before bed, you should have a nighttime skincare routine to make sure that your skin gets all of the nutrients and hydration it needs to repair itself while you sleep! With that being said, what exactly do you need for a nighttime skincare routine?

Here is a brief overview of the order you should be applying your skincare in!

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Serums
  • Eye cream
  • Retinol
  • Moisturizer

STEP 1: CLEANSER

The very first thing you should do before bed is cleansed your face! We are constantly shedding dead skin and cleansing our face in the evening helps remove all of the dead skin that’s laying on our face. Cleansing will also remove all of the products that were applied in the morning! Now that you’ve cleansed, you should have a clean surface to apply your products to!

STEP 2: TONER

Most people do not incorporate toners into their skincare routine, but let me tell you why you should! Toners help balance your skin’s pH and prepare it for the application of serums and moisturizers. Toners are filled with helpful ingredients and nutrients that will rejuvenate your skin throughout the night.

STEP 3: SERUMS

Serums are filled with nutrients and antioxidants that are amazing for your skin. Serums should be patted on the skin, and not rubbed in. A good way to remember to apply serums first is by remembering to apply products with watery consistencies prior to creamy ones. There are so many serums out there, so it is important to find one that is perfect for your skin type. A good serum that is effective on all skin types is hyaluronic acid!

STEP 4: EYE CREAM

Our under eyes are very delicate and often are one of the first areas that remind us that we’re aging. There are many under-eye creams that are created to tighten and brighten ours under eyes! To apply, use your ring finger and gently apply to eye cream in circular motions.

STEP 5: RETINOL

Just like our body, our skin repairs itself while we’re sleeping; and a great way to help the skin repair itself is by incorporating retinol into your nighttime skincare routine!

Retinol is great because it is an anti-ager, and you know what that means, no wrinkles! Retinol helps to stimulate collagen production and accelerate skin turnover. It also helps to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, discoloration and more!

Retinol is a strong ingredient and should be applied only once a week if you’re a first-time user. Once you know how your skin will react to retinol, you can apply it twice a week and then three times a week once you’re comfortable!

On the nights that you apply retinol, make sure to only cleanse, apply eye cream, retinol, and moisturizer.

STEP 6: MOISTURIZER

Moisturizer is extremely important! Applying moisturizer to your skin is like giving your skin a glass of water. Moisturizer is going to hydrate your skin and prevent it from creating pimples and oil. Moisturizer seals everything together and should be your last step before going to bed!
