There is a common misconception that toners do nothing, but they actually do a lot for your skin. Just like moisturizers, cleansers, and serums, there are different toners for different skin types. Each toner has different ingredients ranging from antioxidants to anti-inflammatories.
The purpose of toners is to balance the skins pH levels. Skin has a pH balance ranging from 0 to 14. The lower the pH, the more acidic (oily skin) your skin will be. The higher the pH, the more alkaline (dry skin) your skin will be. A perfect pH for the skin is 5.5, however, most people’s pH levels are anywhere between 4 – 6.
Cleansers are one of the reasons why our pH levels get thrown off balance, which is why toners should be applied right after cleansing the skin! They will help to balance your pH and to prep your skin for the next steps in your skincare regimen.
