What’s the one thing that everyone wants to avoid? Aging. Although there is no actual way to avoid aging, there are a few ways to prevent signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines. So, what’s the secret to looking young? The answer is retinol, but what exactly is retinol and how are you supposed to use it?
WHAT IS RETINOL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
There are so many products that help with anti-aging, but none of them compare to the effects that retinol has. Retinol is a derivative of retinoid that is made up of vitamin A, and what makes retinol so special is that it goes deeper than just the first layer of the skin (epidermis). Retinol reaches the deeper layer of the skin, the dermis.
Once retinol reaches the dermis, it helps your body produce new collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins that keep the skin looking young. Unfortunately, we stop producing these proteins starting at the age of 25 which is why it is crucial to use retinol. Retinol will help prevent and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and large pores. Besides that, retinol will help to improve the tone and texture of the skin.
HOW TO USE RETINOL?
Retinol is a very strong product, and if used wrong can irritate the skin. Therefore, it’s so important to learn how to properly use retinol and to slowly incorporate it into your skincare routine if you’ve never used it before.
We recommend that you start using retinol in your mid 20’s or early 30s, and if you want to get a head start you can even start in your early 20s. If you’re a first-time retinol user, you need to begin using a very little amount of retinol at a slow pace. You can begin by using a pea-sized amount of retinol at night once a week. You should only use retinol once a week for the first month of using it to see how your skin reacts. Depending on the reaction, you can determine if you can use it more than once a week or keep using it at that pace. Once you get used to retinol, you can begin using it twice a week, and then three times a week. You should be using retinol every other day and should not be using it more than three times a week.
On the day that you use retinol, you shouldn’t apply any other products besides retinol. Combining retinol with other products or ingredients can cause your skin to get irritated and flaky. You should only be cleansing your skin (don’t exfoliate) and applying retinol and that’s it! No more products for that night. Another factor to take into consideration is using sunscreen. Retinol does make your skin more sensitive to light, so make sure to wear sunscreen every day, but most importantly to not forget to wear it the day after you’ve used retinol.
